Materials for Erwin Projects
Match the stone to the job. For a dry creek bed that moves water away from the foundation, Large River Rock holds its place in heavy flow. Use River Rock in decorative beds and borders where you want a cleaner, rounded look that stays put.
For play areas or a soft path, 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel is easy underfoot and packs well. It also works as pipe bedding. Around the yard, Screenings level paver bases and top walkways with a fine, compact surface.
Here is a quick guide to common landscape stone:
For the base under any of this, use ABC Stone. It locks together when compacted and gives the decorative layer a stable bed. Skip the base and you will be re-leveling stone after a hard rain.
Ground and Conditions in Erwin
Red clay across the Piedmont drains slowly and holds water. A compacted base and a drainage layer do most of the work. The Coastal Plain runs sandy and drains fast instead. Erwin sits in the Sandhills, where the soil can go either way, so check what you are digging into.
Heavy rainfall, tropical systems, and hurricane remnants are the real test. Water finds the low spot and moves undersized stone. That is why base depth matters. A minimum depth of 4 inches of compacted ABC stone under a drive handles the load. Add a drainage layer of #57 stone behind a wall or along a downspout run to move water out fast.
Frost depth is shallow here, deepest in the western mountain counties. In Erwin, you do not dig for frost. You dig for drainage. Saturated clay after a long wet spell is what delays a base job. Wait for the ground to dry out, then compact in lifts for a base that lasts.
Ordering and Delivery for Your Erwin Project
Plan your quantity before you order. Measure the length and width of the area in feet. Multiply by the depth you need in feet to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to get cubic yards. That tells you what to order. When in doubt, round up. Running short mid-project costs you time.
